For local inhabitants and businesses, the disaster is also economic. Florida is a big travel market. With great beaches and world-famous attractions such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, the state attracts many families who book a vacation rental for their stay. Cities like Orlando and Kissimmee usually rank high in market size for vacation rental revenues.

Have you ever visited one of the most respected website in the vacation rental industry, aptly called the Vacation Rental Marketing Blog? His founder, Matt Landau, has created a wealth of advice that vacation rental owners and managers can put to good use.

How do I know? Because when I started out, I avidly read EVERYTHING that Matt was publishing. He helped me thing of my rentals as a business, not just a source of side revenues. Over the years, I’ve exchanged several emails with him and he has always been available to give me great advice.

Matt has also created an online community, called the Inner Circle. I am a member of this group of fellow vacation rental owners and mangers, and I think you should be too. Matt has recored a special video for you, readers of the RentalPreneurs blog, to explain what his Inner Circle. Watch it here now.

Full disclosure: You have to pay a small to monthly fee to be part of the community. I am not getting any money from promoting Matt Landau’s website. I am only endorsing and recommending it to you because it is the best community / forum around for vacation rental entrepreneurs.

Matt, you are the most prominent blogger in the vacation rental industry. How did your Vacation Rental Marketing Blog get started?

vacation rental marketing blog vrmb

I launched VRMB after running my own fleet of vacation rentals nearly into the ground. What became evident really quickly was that no matter how passionate or skilled I was at hosting guests, if I didn’t get a basic grasp of online marketing, my vacation rental business would slowly die.

So being an economics major, I began documenting what was working and how to do it…meticulously. When my little “marketing library” hit 100 entries, I opened a website to share them for free, 100% open source. That was in 2012. VRMB now sees 12,000+ visitors each month. And the model is still the same: everything is free and everything works.

I am a happy member of your Inner Circle where I get great value from reading other people’s best practices. Why should fellow vacation rental owners and managers join us in this forum-based community?

The Inner Circle is not for everyone. The first thing owners and managers should decide is “what do they want from their vacation rental business?” 7 out of 10 VR professionals want solely short-term gain and are not willing to invest the time or money in building something that lasts (which is totally fine, by the way). For those folks, sticking with listing sites and riding the vacation rental wave is a perfectly acceptable strategy forward.

For the other 30% of people who want to build a vacation rental business that they can pass down to their children, coaching and mentorship becomes extremely important. It allows you to avoid costly errors, learn in a more focused way, and reach your goals more quickly. The Inner Circle is simply the only place you can do this online without having to sift through bullshit. So to answer your question, fellow owners and managers should join our community because they want to build the most sustainably profitable vacation rental business possible AND have fun doing so in the company of 700+ inspiring vacation rental rockstars.

The Inner Circle also gives access to your online courses, spreadsheets, and PDFs. How can VR owners and managers use these resources to gain independence from the big listing sites?

Because the vacation rental industry is so new, there have been no frameworks to follow; A void that makes building one’s business like navigating a ship in the dark. In the Inner Circle, we carefully track hundreds of success stories, we identify the common threads that make each one of them tick, and we then document those discoveries in the form of training materials (video courses, PDFs, eBooks, workshops…etc.)

If you think of the Inner Circle like a conveyor belt of best practices, our training section has the golden prototypes. These prototypes guide our individual paths to success. They are the lighthouses to our ships.

Can you share with us 2 cases of people who have joined your Inner Circle and who have then really used it to make over respective vacation rental businesses?

I’ll do even better: I’ll share two recent testimonials:

Just got an inquiry two days after my new website was launched thanks to the Inner Circle. On day three, I converted my 2nd inquiry into a booking!!! Finding this community has been honestly life changing. I want to thank each and every member of this community for the invaluable advice from the bottom of my heart. Since joining this community and instituting just a few suggestions made here I’ve gone from a few sold out weekends (I’ve got 6 units) to doing 20k in sales in January and have sold out almost all inventory in March. I am about 40% occupancy so far for April. And I really haven’t scratched the surface marketing wise. Currently expanding my inventory thanks in large part to the advice I’ve received here. While I don’t have the greatest vacation rental market anyone in the IC, I am unbelievably excited for the future. I can’t thank each and everyone of you enough! My only regret is that I don’t have the experience to provide much constructive advice to the community. I hope to be in a position in the near future to be able to give back to this community that has given me so much.” – Jack in Texas

A co-All Star from the VRBO Community reached out asking, “Was the Inner Circle worth the monthly fee? Would it help his business? Or was it just another discussion format like the VRBO Community?” I told him that being a part of the IC is like getting a Masters in vacation renting. Plus being surrounded by others with the same goals and like minds will elevate his support circle which will definitely elevate his vacation rental business.” – Jan in Vancouver
